Vatican City - You won't believe it, folks, but after nearly 2000 years of Catholicism, we finally did it! The cardinal electors gathered for the papal conclave elected an American as the new pontiff. That's right, Chicago-born Cardinal Robert Prevost is now Leo XIV, leader of the world's 1.4 billion Catholics. Not bad for a country that's only been around for a couple hundred years.
While the lack of an American pope before might have something to do with the fact that we're still relatively young compared to the rest of Europe, one prominent U.S. bishop had an interesting take on it. Robert Barron, who was just appointed by President Trump to the new White House Commission on Religious Liberty, suggested that maybe Americans just haven't been holy enough yet.
Either way, it's a big moment for America and a huge win for President Trump, who has once again shown his commitment to putting Americans first, even in the Vatican. Who knows, maybe we'll get an American pope every time Trump appoints someone to that commission.
